The purpose of the Mary Kennebrew Lyons Endowed Scholarship is to provide financial assistance and to encourage attainment of an associate degree from the College. Financial support may include assistance with tutoring, transportation, technology.  
 
The College shall choose the recipient(s) of the Scholarship(s) in accordance with college policy and criteria established by the Donor. The scholarship shall be open to all applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, citizenship, disability, age, or veteran status.
 
Student applicants will be considered based on the following criteria:
 
1.  Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 as an entering student or continuing student

This scholarship was established by the members of the MCC Faculty Association in the aftermath of the protests sparked by the police killing of George Floyd and others in 2020 to honor those whose lives have been cut short in racist atrocities, and those who have worked untiringly to overcome direct and indirect racist discrimination and violence throughout the history of the United States.  Its purpose is to help empower a student who is committed to fighting injustice to move us all towards a better world in which systemic racism is a thing of the past.

Requirements:
  • Applicants may be either incoming freshmen with a high school GPA of at least 2.5 or returning MCC students with an MCC GPA of at least 2.0. 
  • Applicants must have a demonstrated record of anti-racist activism. 
  • Applicants must submit a personal essay outlining their dedication to promoting racial justice. (The essay may be either a written paper or may take the form of a video or other presentation.) 
  • Applicants must provide two letters of recommendation. 
  • The scholarship may be renewed in subsequent years up to 62 credits with satisfactory academic progress and a report on continued involvement in activism.
